Two days before the 1944 election, Franklin D. Roosevelt was on a campaign swing through Massachusetts, traveling from Worcester to Boston by train. The record names Senator David I. Walsh and Governor Maurice J. Tobin, both Massachusetts Democrats, and Admiral William D. Leahy, who served as the President's chief of staff. Roosevelt was seeking a fourth term against Republican Thomas E. Dewey, and whistle-stop tours like this one let him speak to crowds at station stops across the state. Photographs from these trips capture the era's political travel, when a president's campaign depended on the railroad and the local figures who rode along.
