The distinguishing feature of this engraving is its vantage point: the view is taken from the water, so the city rises behind the harbor traffic rather than being seen from its streets. Faneuil Hall, the colonial-era market and meeting house that Boston's residents long called the "Cradle of Liberty," appears among the waterfront buildings, and the subject list also records steamboats and sailing ships working the wharves. The print comes from Gleason's Pictorial, a Boston illustrated weekly that circulated widely in the 1850s and paired engravings like this one with news and features. Such views were prized for showing a port city at the height of its maritime commerce, just before the railroads began to reshape how goods and passengers moved.
