Billed as "Newmann the Great," this color lithograph promotes a hypnotist and mind reader, a headliner type that drew crowds to vaudeville houses and touring shows in the early twentieth century. Its bold color and dramatic staging were meant to catch the eye on a city street or a theater wall. Stage hypnotism had been popular since the late nineteenth century, when public fascination with mesmerism and suggestion carried into entertainment, and posters like this one show how performers sold that mystery to audiences. The record dates it only tentatively to around 1916.
