Billed as "Newmann the Great," this color lithograph promotes a hypnotist and mind reader, a stage act that toured American theaters in the 1910s. Mind reading and hypnotism drew large audiences in that period, building on nineteenth-century fascination with mesmerism and animal magnetism. Posters like this one, printed in bold color and sized for billboards and shop windows, were a main way touring performers announced their arrival in a town. The poster is dated around 1916 and belongs to the McManus-Young Collection of magic-related material at the Library of Congress.
