The poster bills a performer as "Newmann the Great," and its record credits the St. Paul firm Standard, which printed it in color lithography around 1930. Touring magicians of that era often ordered posters like this from commercial printers, who sometimes kept stock designs that could be adapted to a performer's name and show. Bold colors and large lettering were meant to catch the eye of passersby on a street or in a theater lobby. At 36 by 28 centimeters, the sheet was built to be pasted up in shop windows and on hoardings, so surviving examples show how vaudeville-era magic was publicized to ordinary audiences.
