Here the magician drives a horse-drawn coach with a blindfold over his eyes, the feat named in the caption "Making his famous blindfold drive." The sheet was printed by the Riverside Printing Company of Milwaukee around 1898, when touring stage magicians relied on large color lithographs to draw crowds to theaters and opera houses. Newmann, billed as "the Great," built his reputation on spectacles like this one, where bold imagery did as much work as the illusion itself. Posters like this preserve how traveling entertainers marketed themselves before film and radio.
