Here the performer's billing, "Newmann the Great," sets the poster apart from the many magic lithographs of its era. It was printed in Saint Paul, Minnesota, by Standard Show Printers, a firm that produced bold color posters for traveling theaters, circuses, and variety acts in the late 1890s. Posters like this one were meant to be read from a distance by passersby, so they leaned on large lettering, dramatic color, and promises of wonders on stage.
