The billing "That Brilliant Psychic Star, Newmann the Great" presents C. A. George Newmann as a mentalist and fortune-teller, and the poster's lithographed color art promoted him as a headline act. It was printed by Standard Show Printers of St. Paul, Minnesota, a firm that turned out theatrical and touring show posters, and it dates to about 1928. Such posters were meant to be seen from a distance on streets, storefronts, and tent-show lots, so their bold lettering and dramatic imagery were central to drawing crowds. Spiritualism and fortune-telling drew wide public interest in the 1920s, which helps explain why psychic performers were promoted this way.
