Shot on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate, this view pairs a waterfront with mountains rising behind it, the kind of lake-and-peak scene that drew visitors to northern New York. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made and sold views of American scenery in the early 1900s, used large-format negatives like this one to document resort regions reached by rail. The Adirondacks, a wilderness of lakes and forested ridges, were becoming a popular summer destination for travelers seeking cool air and time on the water. The large plate size preserves fine detail in the water and the hillsides.
