Titled *Scalp Dancer*, this silkscreen shows a dancer in full regalia by Woody Crumbo, a Potawatomi artist from Oklahoma. The scalp dance was a victory ceremony in several Plains and Woodland nations, where warriors celebrated success with song and dance, and Crumbo's choice of subject reflects his interest in both the ceremony and the dress that went with it. The Library of Congress catalogs the print under clothing and dance, so it records costume as much as movement. Crumbo's flat shapes and bold color reflect the modernist style he developed in the mid-twentieth century, when he worked in printmaking alongside painting.
