Cave of the Winds, the cavern tucked behind the thundering water at the foot of the Bridal Veil Falls on the American side, is the subject here, and this stereograph shows why it drew so many visitors. Charles Bierstadt, who ran a studio at Niagara Falls, issued the card as No. 781 in his series, and its paired images were meant to be seen through a stereoscope, where the mist and rock would appear to rise in three dimensions. Such cards were a popular parlor entertainment in the late 1800s, bringing famous sights to people who would never travel to see them.
