Cave of the Winds is a tourist path that runs behind the thundering falls at the base of the cliff on the American side of Niagara, and this albumen print shows that spot as visitors of the late 1880s would have seen it. The name refers to the wet, wind-driven mist that funneled through the rocky recess, soaking anyone who ventured onto the wooden walkways and ladders. George Barker, a photographer who worked the Niagara trade and stamped his name on the mounts he sold, made the picture around 1888, when the falls had become one of the most photographed sites in the country. Note the sheer scale of the water against the tiny figures of the visitors.
