A Michigan Central Railroad locomotive, No. 446, sits at the left edge of this wide view, bringing the railroad into a scene otherwise given over to the falls. The Michigan Central carried many visitors to Niagara, so the engine marks how rail travel and tourism grew together around the cataract in the early 1900s. The long panoramic format, typical of the Detroit Publishing Company's views, spreads the gorge across a strip of paper. Such views were sold to travelers and collectors, making this one a record of how Niagara was seen and visited around 1900.
