A Michigan Central Railroad locomotive, engine number 446, sits at the left edge of this wide view, placing the rail line directly within the scene of the falls. The long panoramic format, about 38 by 136 centimeters, gave the Detroit Photographic Company room to show the river and cataract stretching across the frame. Around 1900, Niagara Falls was one of the country's most visited destinations, and railroads like the Michigan Central carried many of those tourists to its edge. The print is worth a close look for the way it pairs industrial travel with a natural wonder at the turn of the century.
