Most of the Niagara Falls views in this series show the cataract itself, but this card turns to the small wooded islands in the river above the falls, where a footbridge reached the first of the Sister Islands from the mainland side. Charles Bierstadt's studio in Niagara Falls, New York, produced stereographs like this one for tourists who bought them by the hundred and viewed them through hand stereoscopes at home. The paired images give a sense of depth, letting viewers feel they stood on the planks above fast water. The card's "No. 688" marks its place in the publisher's numbered catalog.
