In 1913, Texas was a state on edge, with the Mexican Revolution raging just across the Rio Grande. Military posts such as Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio held regular Army infantry regiments ready for duty along the border, and the Mexican Revolution had already drawn American troops toward the frontier. Texas was also growing quickly, with its cotton, cattle, lumber, and oil industries expanding and railroads linking its towns to Gulf ports and markets. For the soldiers pictured and the families who lived near their posts, the regiment was a visible sign of federal power in a region where border raids, political upheaval, and questions about Mexican affairs were part of everyday talk.
