The sculpture in this view is a battle monument at the southern end of Lake George, New York, honoring the fighting of September 1755, when colonial and British-allied forces under William Johnson turned back a French and Native allied force near the lake during the French and Indian War. The nearby pond, known as Bloody Pond, took its name from the dead left there after the engagement. Detroit Publishing Company photographers worked across the country around 1904, selling views of scenic and historic sites to travelers, and this glass negative captures how a commemorative monument and its quiet lakeside setting were presented to visitors of that era.
