A private dock at Crosbyside, a shoreline resort area on Lake George in New York's Adirondack foothills, is the subject of this glass-plate negative. Lake George drew steamboat passengers and summer visitors from New York City and beyond in the decades after the Civil War, and docks like this one served the guest cottages and hotels that lined the water. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the picture, sold views of American resorts, rivers and scenic places through catalogues like the one cited in its record, so the scene was made to show the leisure and natural beauty that drew travelers to the lake.
