The steamer Horicon, a side-wheel passenger boat, pulls away from its pier on Lake George in New York in this view from about 1904. Side-wheelers like her were the main way visitors reached hotels, camps and landings around the lake in the decades before good roads, and the wharf and gathered passengers show how central the boat was to daily life on the water. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded resorts, rail lines and scenic places across the country around the turn of the century.
