Horicon Lodge at Cleverdale, on Lake George in New York, is known here through its long porches, which were built for guests to sit in the shade and watch the lake. The negative is an 8 by 10 inch glass plate from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed hotels, resorts and scenic places across the country in the early 1900s, and its date is estimated at around 1907. Lake George drew summer visitors by steamboat and rail from the late nineteenth century, and its large frame hotels and lodges were built to serve them. Porches like these were central to that leisure culture, offering shade, cooler air and a view of the water.
