Cedars partly screen the Fort William Henry Hotel in this view, which gives the picture its title, *Half through the cedars*. The hotel stood on the shore of Lake George in New York's Adirondack region, near the site of the colonial fort besieged in 1757 during the French and Indian War. By the turn of the twentieth century, resort hotels like this one drew summer visitors from the cities, and the Detroit Publishing Company made many such views for the tourist trade. The glass negative shows how the resort presented itself, with its shaded grounds and landscaping as much a subject as the building.
