The fountain in the hotel's piazza and a steamboat named *Horicon* on the water set this view apart from other lake scenes. The Fort William Henry Hotel stood beside the ruins of the British fort that was besieged by the French in 1757, and by the early 1900s the lakeside had become a fashionable summer destination for travelers arriving by rail and steamer. The Detroit Publishing Company made many such views of American resorts for promotional use, so the picture shows how the hotel grounds were presented to visitors at the time.
