Maricopa, Arizona, in 1913 was a small farming and railroad settlement in Pinal County, south of Phoenix, where the Southern Pacific line had given it a depot and a reason to exist. Arizona had become a state only the year before, in February 1912, and its new government was still settling into its offices and laws. Farmers in the surrounding valley grew alfalfa, grain, and cotton on irrigated land, and their crops moved out by rail to buyers elsewhere. Daily life centered on the depot, the general store, the church, and the school, where families knew one another by name. A panoramic view from that year shows a community still small enough to take in at a glance, on the edge of desert land being turned into farms.
