Roosevelt Dam, on the Salt River about 70 miles northeast of Phoenix, was the centerpiece of Arizona's early water works in 1913, the year after the territory became a state. Federal engineers built the masonry dam between 1905 and 1911 under the Reclamation Service, and President Theodore Roosevelt dedicated it in 1911. Its reservoir stored spring runoff for canals that watered the Salt River Valley, where farmers were turning desert land into fields of alfalfa, grain, and citrus. Phoenix and the valley towns depended on that water, and residents who had seen the dam rise often spoke of it as the project that made their irrigated farms possible. The panorama shows the dam as a new fact of life for a region that had only recently gained statehood.
