Superior, Arizona, in 1913 was a copper and silver mining town in the Pinal Mountains country of Pinal County, a place where the ore pulled from nearby shafts shaped nearly every household's income. Arizona had become the 48th state only the year before, in February 1912, and mining towns like Superior were among the places where new state politics and labor concerns were most visible. Miners in these camps came from Mexico, southern and eastern Europe, and the American South, and their wages, shift whistles, and company-built housing set the rhythm of daily life. Residents of the period knew Superior as a hard-working mine town whose fortunes rose and fell with the price of copper and the state of the nearby workings.
