Titled simply *Oranda*, or "Holland," this 1861 color woodcut shows a Dutch household at its domestic work, with an oven, cheese, and a mother and children gathered together. The design is signed by Issen Yoshikazu, who belonged to the generation of Japanese artists drawn to the Westerners arriving in the treaty ports after 1859, when Yokohama and other harbors opened to foreign trade. Prints like this satisfied public curiosity about unfamiliar customs, and its kitchen and family scenes show how Japanese artists imagined daily life abroad. The block was cut by the engraver Koizumi Minokichi.
