Robert Benchley, the humorist and drama critic, is the subject of this ink-over-graphite drawing, a caricature that exaggerates the features that made him recognizable to readers of The New Yorker and Vanity Fair. Benchley (1889-1945) built his reputation on wry, self-deprecating pieces about the small indignities of daily life, and he was also a well-known presence in the Algonquin Round Table circle in New York during the 1920s. Caricaturists of that period often worked in this loose, quick style, using pen lines over a light pencil sketch to capture a sitter's personality as much as his likeness. The record dates the drawing only to a span between 1920 and 1957, so its exact occasion is not known.
