Albert Lea, the seat of Freeborn County in south-central Minnesota, was a railroad and farm town in 1908, named for Albert Miller Lea, an army surveyor who passed through the region in the 1830s. Rail lines serving the town made it a shipping point for the grain, livestock, and dairy products that came off the surrounding farmland. Residents knew it as a county trade center where farm families came to buy supplies, sell produce, and conduct business at the courthouse. Through the decade, new commercial blocks, churches, and homes went up as the town grew alongside the agricultural economy that sustained it. The lake that gave the town its setting remained a local gathering place for residents throughout the period.
