Columbia, the capital of South Carolina, was a small city of cotton mills, rail lines, and state offices in 1918, and it was also the home of the University of South Carolina. The United States had entered the First World War the year before, and Camp Jackson, an Army training cantonment on the city's outskirts, had been filling with draftees and volunteers since 1917. This photograph shows a British Day observance, one of the Allied-support gatherings held in American towns that year to raise money and spirit for Britain and its allies. Local people would have understood such a day as part of the wider effort, tied to Liberty Loan drives, war relief, and the rationing and volunteer work that touched nearly every household. The war ended in November, and the influenza epidemic that autumn would soon press on the same community.
