Few places in France are as tied to revolt as Versailles, and this engraving, titled *Insurrection at Versailles*, puts the palace grounds at the center of a crowded, turbulent scene. The plate credits H. Bridport as designer and J.H. Nesmith as engraver, but the record does not say which uprising it shows. The best-known episode came in October 1789, when Parisian women marched out to the palace over bread shortages and pressed the royal family back to Paris. Because the print dates from somewhere between 1820 and 1870, it reflects how later decades remembered such events rather than an eyewitness view.
