Few details set this sixth-plate daguerreotype apart as clearly as its hand-applied color and the mixed flower design on its case. The brass mat is stamped J. P. Ball, 30 W 4th St, and that studio address is the basis for dating the picture to about 1862. The sitters are unidentified, but the man's right arm resting around the woman's shoulder reflects the relaxed, companionable couple portraits popular in the early 1860s. Light hand-coloring on cheeks and clothing added warmth to an otherwise silver-and-gray image.
