Seated beside a draped table, with a stack of books at her elbow and a curtain drawn to one side, this unidentified woman wears spectacles, a detail that sets her portrait apart from the many formal sitters of the decade. Daguerreotypes such as this one were unique silvered copper plates, so each image exists only as this single object. The sixth-plate size, about 2.75 by 3.25 inches, made the format affordable for ordinary families in the 1850s. The maker's Rinhart hallmark on the case helps date the object, though the photographer remains unknown.
