A woman poses with a book in her hands, and more books rest on a table to her right, suggesting a reader proud of her learning or a household that valued it. The image is a sixth-plate daguerreotype, a small format of about 2 by 3 inches that was sold in protective cases during the 1840s and 1850s. Hand-coloring was added to the silvery plate, typically to tint the cheeks, lips and clothing, which made the portrait look more lifelike to its owner. Its geometric-patterned case is a typical feature of the period's cased portraits.
