A hand-colored sixth-plate daguerreotype, its brass mat stamped "J. P. Ball, Cincinnati," shows a woman holding a child in her lap. Cincinnati was one of the busiest daguerreotype centers in the 1850s, and the small plate size and tinted cheeks, lips, and clothing made these portraits affordable keepsakes for families of modest means. The sitters remain unidentified, but the oval case with its decorative scrolls and the mother-and-child pose reflect the sentimental taste of the period.
