Scratched into the face of the plate with the name "Augusta," this half plate daguerreotype carries a catalog note proposing that the sitter is Madame Augusta. The image came from the studio of Mathew Brady, whose New York and Washington operation made portraits of stage performers and public figures in the years before the Civil War. Gold toning, applied to many plates of this period, deepened the silver image and helped protect its surface, while the costume suggests the sitter was dressed for the stage or a masquerade. The plate reached the Library of Congress through a 1920 transfer from the U.S. War College.
