Its velvet lining is stamped with the name Bailey and an address on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, pointing to one of the city's busy commercial studios of the late 1840s. The unidentified sitter rests one hand on a table, and the plate has been tinted by hand, a common finishing step that added touches of color to the silvered copper. The case's decorative bouquet, surrounded by scrolls, reflects the ornate styling that made these portraits feel special to their owners. Each daguerreotype was a single, unrepeatable object, so this example preserves one sitting from around 1847.
