A seated man and a standing woman who rests a hand near his shoulder make up this hand-colored quarter-plate daguerreotype, a small mirror-bright image sealed in a case in the Eichmeyer style. The brass mat is stamped "J. P. Ball, Cincinnati," and the date range of 1847 to 1860 comes from the address the photographer used in those years. Cincinnati was a busy river city then, and its studios competed for customers by offering hand coloring, which gave a silvery plate a warmer, more lifelike look. The couple remain unidentified, but their pose and dress reflect the formal conventions of mid-century portraiture.
