Congress Spring Park in Saratoga Springs, New York, is the setting here, and the glass-plate negative shows a morning concert gathered around the park's bandstand beside its lake. The park grew up around the mineral springs that drew visitors to Saratoga from the early 1800s, and by the years before 1915 open-air music was a regular part of the resort's leisure life. The image comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled the country documenting scenic places and popular pastimes for postcards and promotional prints. Its wide view of listeners and water captures how a spa town staged its everyday recreation.
