The main entrance to the Saratoga race track in Saratoga Springs, New York, is the focus of this view, taken between 1900 and 1910. The Saratoga Race Course, which opened in 1863, drew wealthy visitors each summer to the resort town, and the carriages and street railway lines listed in the record reflect how crowds reached the grounds. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass plate negative, documented many American resorts and landmarks in this period, making the scene a useful record of early twentieth-century travel and leisure.
