The White Sulphur Springs Hotel was one of the many resort hotels that drew visitors to Saratoga Springs, New York, a town famous since the 1800s for its mineral waters and fashionable summer season. This view was made as a glass-plate negative between about 1900 and 1910 by the Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American towns, resorts and scenery during those years. The record links the hotel to Saratoga Lake, a reminder that these establishments were often set in the surrounding countryside as well as in town. Glass negatives like this one capture fine detail in the building and grounds, making them useful for studying how resort architecture looked at the turn of the century.
