Broadway runs through the heart of Saratoga Springs, and this view centers on the Grand Union Hotel, which was among the largest hotels in the country when it opened in 1874. The hotel drew wealthy summer guests who came for the mineral springs, the horse racing, and the social season that made Saratoga a fashionable resort. The picture was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its travel views, and its large glass negative records the street and the scale of the resort in the years before 1910.
