Broadway in Saratoga Springs, looking north from the Grand Union Hotel, is the focus here, a view of the street that ran through the town's famous mineral-spring resort district. The Grand Union was among the largest hotels in the country during the late nineteenth century, and Broadway was the main promenade where summer visitors strolled between hotels, bathhouses and spring pavilions. The photograph was taken around 1889 by S.R. Stoddard of Glens Falls, New York, a prolific local photographer who documented the region's resorts for sale as stereographs and large prints. Its record notes that the date and details come from an older caption card and have not been independently verified.
