The Grand Union stood in Saratoga Springs, the mineral-spring resort town that drew wealthy summer visitors from New York City and beyond. Built in the 1870s, it was among the largest hotels of its day, with broad verandas where guests gathered to see and be seen. This c1904 glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company captures the hotel at the height of the resort era, when Saratoga's hotels served as social centers through the summer season. The record suggests the scene may have been made during a political gathering, since the town's hotels often filled with party men and delegates in campaign years.
