Looking down Broadway to Monument Square, this view puts the Grand Union Hotel at the center of Saratoga Springs, the mineral-spring resort town in upstate New York that drew wealthy summer visitors for much of the nineteenth century. The square also holds a Civil War monument, which is why the record lists that conflict among its subjects. The glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American towns and resorts in the years before 1915, when the company's views were popular with travelers and publishers.
