The Carlsbad Hotel stood in Saratoga Springs, the New York resort town built around its mineral springs and long popular with summer visitors. This view is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its photographs of American towns, scenery and tourist destinations. The record dates it only to between 1900 and 1915, and the negative reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado. Large glass plates like this one captured fine architectural detail, which makes them useful for studying how resort hotels were built and presented to guests.
