The sign at the left reads "Hotel American" and the one to the right reads "Adelphi," so this view shows the two establishments side by side on the same Saratoga Springs street, a pairing that tells you how crowded the town's hotel row had become. Saratoga was among the most fashionable summer resorts in the country in the early 1900s, drawing visitors for its mineral springs, its racetrack, and its piazza-fronted hotels. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large-format views documented American resorts and towns for tourism and rail travel.
