The United States Hotel was one of the large summer hotels that gave Saratoga Springs its reputation as a fashionable mineral-spring resort in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Visitors arrived by rail to take the waters, stroll the verandas, and attend the racing and social season, and hotels like this one were central to that routine. The photographer's view takes in the hotel and the street in front of it, showing how the resort town was laid out around its lodgings. The negative came from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large-format views of American towns were made for the travel trade around 1900 to 1910.
