The veranda of the United States Hotel in Saratoga Springs, New York, anchors this view, with its long run of porch space where summer guests could sit and watch the street. Saratoga drew wealthy visitors for its mineral springs and its racetrack, and large hotels like this one housed them for weeks at a time, with verandas serving as the social center of the day. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American towns and resorts for travel publications, made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative sometime between about 1890 and 1910. The porch remains a useful record of how resort life was organized around outdoor sitting space.
