The Hotel American in Saratoga Springs carries a Democratic banner naming Alton B. Parker for president and Henry G. Davis of West Virginia for vice president, the party's 1904 ticket. Parker, a New York judge, was nominated that summer and ran against the sitting Republican president, Theodore Roosevelt, and a second banner behind the hotel appears to name Roosevelt. Saratoga's hotels drew wealthy summer visitors and political figures, which made them natural places for campaign displays. The glass negative came from the Detroit Photographic Company, whose views of American towns and resorts were widely sold in the early 1900s.
