Looking east down Union Avenue in Saratoga Springs, New York, this view captures a tree-lined boulevard that was once one of the grand approaches to the resort town's famous mineral springs. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced thousands of views of American towns and scenery in the decades around 1900, made this glass-plate negative sometime between 1900 and 1920. Saratoga had drawn wealthy visitors since the early nineteenth century, and its broad avenues and hotels reflected that prosperity. The image is a useful record of how a summer resort town looked in the early twentieth century.
